Backyard Birdies 1, 2, 3, & 4

In our garden is a nest in a hanging strawberry plant. These precious little ones hatched within the last day or three. Below, the mom returns some goodies to feed her hatchlings.

Above, mom feeds her babies some spiders. Below, ten days ago, the four hatchlings were just eggs.

(8/4/04: I received a nice reply from Anne Hobbs of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, to my query as to the type of birds these are.

"These are Dark-eyed Juncos. Apparently back in the sixties, several species of junco were lumped together under the name Junco hyemalis. We realize that there is some work to be done on probably splitting them again but that isn't happening. The different birds are considered 'populations' and include the Oregon, Pink-sided, White-winged and Slate-colored."

These birds are of the Oregon 'population'.)
